How do I get started?

Start thinking about you interests and finding universities where those courses are offered:

• One way to start the process is to think about what subject (major) you want to pursue and find out which universities offer that major. It is not always possible to decide on a subject but basic science and Engineering majors are offered by most of the major universities.

• One has to take into account the fact that not all colleges/ departments in a university have the same recognition. For example, a certain university might have a good engineering school but a not so good business school.

• Consider which type of university you would like to attend in terms of size, cost, location etc. 

Get a passport:

Start collecting information about universities:

• One good way source of information is to go online and check university websites. Some websites that might be useful are www.usnews.com and www.collegeboard.com.

• The United States Educational Foundation of India (USEFI) is another source that might be of help(www.fulbright-india.org) . The USEFI has offices in Delhi,Chennai,Kolkata and Mumbai. It has satellite offices at Hyberabad, Ahmedabad and Bangalore.

• If you have relatives or friends in the US consult with them. They can definitely provide some good information as to which colleges you can consider applying.

• If you are visiting the US  for some reason visit some universities , if possible. University staff would generally be happy to show you around but make sure you contact them well in advance and let them know of your plans to visit.
