How much does an American undergraduate degree cost?

  • The cost of undergraduate education is substantial especially when compared to India. It can cost you about $35,000 - 50,000(Rs14 lakhs - 20 lakhs*) for two semesters depending on the university. This includes tuition, room and board, living expenses, and books. The tuition usually contributes most to the expenses.
  • Private universities like Harvard and other ivy leagues, MIT, UIUC etc. are more expensive than state universities.
  • Very limited scholarships are available for international undergraduates. Students who apply early (before December of previous year) and have a good SAT and ACT scores generally have a better chance of getting scholarships.
